How to Make Your Own Air Conditioning Unit

Everybody experiences the unbearable heat every day in the Philippines. Affordable electrical appliances like electric fans are not always enough to make your room cool and help you sleep comfortably at night. Instead, you need an air conditioner. Unfortunately, not everyone can afford air conditioning units since they’re fairly expensive to begin with and are expensive to use too, especially if the weather is humid for extended periods.

This DIY air conditioner is perfect for those who can’t afford, or are currently saving for, an actual air conditioning unit. It’s cheap and you probably have all of the materials to make this at home already! Though it’s not advisable to use this to cool big rooms or your entire house, it is perfect for cooling small bedrooms. Aside from using tools and materials that might be lying around your house, it’s also easy to assemble. However, if you want to use some power tools for this, you should have someone who knows how to handle those power tools.

What are the Materials?

Alright, for this DIY air conditioner, you will need:

• Cheap Styrofoam icebox or an unused cooler;

• Some plastic or PVC pipes and elbow pipes – it depends on how big you want the air conditioner to be, but obviously you’re going to need one that isn’t bigger than your cooler;

• A Fukuda 18’’ ground electric fan or any Fukuda electric fan that is – once again – not bigger than your cooler;

• Other tools that you might need are: a cutter if you’re using a Styrofoam icebox, a saw or a small power saw and a drill if you’re using a cooler, a ruler if you need to measure something, and a pencil.

Creating the Air Conditioner

First, you’ll have to gather your materials.

Second, mark on the cover of your cooler or icebox where you want to place your fan and your pipes. Trace around the pipes and the fan on the cover, then cut carefully with a cutter if you’re using the styrofoam icebox. If you’re using a cooler, drill a hole into the cover so it’s easier to use your power saw.

Third, attach the pipes and the fan to the cover. It’s better to put the air’s exit on the cover too so that you can keep the chest hole free. Secure it however you wish. Just make sure that the fan is stable on the cover and won’t fall.

Fourth, put some ice in the ice chest or the cooler. It’s best to put water into thick plastic bags and freeze them so that when they melt, they’ll still be in the bag and you can just pop them back into the freezer. No need for messy collection of water from the chest.

Fifth, turn it on! The ice will probably last for about four to five hours, depending on how big the ice block is.

To make the most of your DIY air conditioner, close your windows and shut your doors – just like what you do when you turn on a real air conditioner – so that none of the cool air can escape and be wasted. This will be a cheaper alternative to air conditioning and it doesn’t consume much electricity (unless you count all that freezing).

What are Home Theater Systems?

People used to go to movie theaters when they want to watch a film and unwind after a stressful day. However, with the evolution of technology, affordable home appliances in the Philippines – and around the world – are now available and abundant. Now, people can watch their favorite films in the comfort of their own homes thanks to DVD players and wide-screen televisions.

Although plenty of people are starting to appreciate home theaters, some people still favor movie theaters. After all, TVs have smaller screens and, sometimes, even low quality speakers too compared to theaters. However, through continuous innovations, people now have more options for their home theater setups. As a result, more people are turning their rooms into home theaters. Home theaters used to involve a projector and a screen – both of which are too expensive. Nowadays, more affordable alternatives are available and these devices are often more superior compared to the usual home theater equipment. More and more movie enthusiasts are enjoying the convenience of a home theater without the lack of the quality in picture and sound.

What is a Home Theater System?

Viewing movies in a home theater system is somewhat similar to watching films in movie houses. For the most part, location is the only difference between the two. A home theater system can be as simple as a few AV devices in your home’s TV room or as complex as an entire room renovated to look like a movie theater. It is designed to provide high quality video and audio experience to viewers without leaving their residence. Some people are confused with how a home theater system works. Don’t worry because it is not always an overwhelming set of cables and equipment. It really depends on the user on how simple or complex he or she wants the setup to be.

Surround sound is the factor that sets a home theater apart from an ordinary television setup. If you want a proper surround-sound, you need to have two speakers in front of you, two to your sides, and one behind you. The most prominent sounds usually come out of the front speakers. If in the movie, the sound is coming from the right side of the screen, the audio will also come from the right speaker. Meanwhile, if someone is walking behind the character, you will be able to hear the footsteps at the back speaker.

Benefits of a Home Theater System

For some people, home theaters are considered as luxuries or something so elaborate to the point that it is unnecessary. There are many benefits in investing on a home theater. For one, a home theater system is tailored to suit your needs; you have the freedom to choose the equipment and the room where your home theater system will be installed.

A quality home theater will allow you to share an excellent viewing experience with your family and friends. You can watch concerts, movies, and sports events to your heart’s content. At the same time, your house will be the go-to place for you and your friends to watch your favorite shows.

When properly installed, a home theater system can turn your house into one of the best places to enjoy and appreciate movies and TV shows.

All About TV Refresh Rates

Watching movies, series, and news have become a big part of millions of Filipino’s lives. In this regard, getting an affordable TV in the Philippines is a must for most families. Purchasing and owning a television entails plenty of things. You have to be knowledgeable about certain factors if you want to get a TV. One of the basic information that you will be required to know is TV refresh rates.

What is a TV refresh rate?

Refresh rates are known as the count of frames per second that a television is capable of displaying and Hertz is a unit of frequency used in televisions; it is equal to 1/second. If your TV’s refresh rate is 60Hz, then your television can exhibit about the same number of images per second in its screen. The common refresh rates are 60Hz, 120Hz, and 240Hz.

  • 60Hz – affordable televisions usually have a refresh rate of 60Hz, which is still pretty good. These TVs have the ability to show 24fps and 30fps clips at 60 times per second. Since it is impossible to distribute 24fps in 60Hz, blurring might occur. This is due to a technique called “pulldown,” wherein some frames are displayed several times. This is used especially for 24fps displays wherein some frames are shown two or three times. Meanwhile, the 30fps has no problem in displaying 2 frames per second at ease, showing clear quality displays. Most displays for video game consoles show about 60 frames per second.
  • 120Hz – just imagine that a 60Hz display is improved. It can sync well with a 24fps and 30fps displays. When it comes to the former, a solo frame is shown 5 times before shifting to the next frame. On the other hand, when it comes to 30fps, frames are displayed at 4 times before moving on to the next one. Because of this, watching TV with this refresh rate will be undoubtedly nice and flawless.
  • 240Hz – the 240Hz produces the best display, especially compared to the other two displays. It can also display more frames than the others and it projects crispier displays. In addition, images are less likely to be blurry when it comes to TVs with a refresh rate of 240Hz.

Simply put, a high refresh rate means that images and videos will be displayed in better quality. With the innovations and advancements these days, televisions will further evolve and improve to improve people’s viewing experience.

Is it the same with LCD, LED, and Plasma display?

The answer to this question is “no.” LCD or LED maintain an image for the overall frame length, while plasma uses short pulses to display a picture caused by the greatness of colors. A plasma TV produces greater display compared to LCDs and LEDs. However, LCD televisions are more compact and thin. Despite boasting high refresh rates, LCD and LED TVs are arguably inferior when it comes to the quality of display compared to plasma televisions.

Knowing about refresh rates is important if you want to purchase a TV. However, it is not the only aspect of televisions that you should consider or learn about. Choose a television that will suit your liking and needs.
